SEC Championship Scenarios – Georgia Chances to be in SEC Title Game

*Editor’s Note: This article will be updated as SEC football games conclude the final two weeks of the regular season.*

The Georgia Bulldogs have finished their SEC conference schedule with just two losses. One to Alabama and another to Ole Miss. They have a chance to be in the SEC title game considering several other league members also have multiple losses.

SEC position:

Per SEC rules:
In the event of a tie between teams competing for a spot in the conference championship game, the following procedures will be used in descending order until the tie is broken:
A.) Head-to-head competition between tied teams (Texas A&M and Georgia have not played — Georgia has the head-to-head win over Tennessee)
B.) Record vs. all common conference opponents among tied teams (Georgia and Texas A&M’s common opponents are Texas and Auburn – if they lose to both, Georgia earns a berth in the conference championship.

Georgia, according to SEC rules, must be the winner of Texas A&M and Texas.

The simplest way I’ve seen it:

Georgia faces Georgia Tech on ABC Friday night at Sanford Stadium at 7:30. Georgia has one head-to-head win already this season against Texas in Austin.

Some fans and coaches around the conference, including Lane Kiffin, have questioned the value of making a conference championship because you risk a potential third loss in the case of Georgia. Given the College Football Playoff committee’s inconsistencies of late, all you can do is handle your business on the field.

“I’ve talked to other coaches, so I’m just going to give you that feeling from some other coaches. They don’t want to be involved,” Kiffin said about the SEC Championship game. “You know, the reward of getting a bye versus the risk of getting knocked out completely. I mean, that’s a pretty big risk.”
