The Lexington Recycle Center will close for part of December

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – Recycling in Lexington and surrounding communities will soon have to take a temporary break.

The Lexington Recycle Center will be temporarily closed from December 4th through December 15th.

The municipality says the closure will replace the baler and a fabric structure.

For those with municipal waste collection, the last day to hand in material for recycling until the center reopens on December 16 is:

  • Monday collection: Monday 2 December
  • Tuesday meeting: Tuesday 3 December
  • Thursday or Friday pickup: Wednesday, November 27 There will be no city trash collection on Thursday, November 28 or Friday, November 29 due to Thanksgiving.

They say people can continue to use recycling carts and bins during the shutdown, but the collected material will be sent to a landfill.

The municipality asks residents to keep recyclable items during the shutdown if they are able to. Priority items for storage include aluminum and steel cans and cardboard. Glass, paper and plastic are lower priority items.

The closure affects all communities that send their recyclables to the Lexington Recycle Center. Partner communities include Anderson County, Berea, Boyle County, Clark County, Danville, Frankfort, Franklin County, Georgetown, Harrison County, Harrodsburg, Jessamine County, Lawrenceburg, Madison County, Montgomery County, Nicholasville, Scott County, Shelby County, Shelbyville, Simpsonville, Versailles and Winchester.
