Ryan McCartan becomes Broadway’s new The Great Gatsby

McCartan will succeed Jeremy Jordan at the Broadway Theatre.

Ryan McCartan, previously seen on Broadway as Hans in Disney’s Frozen and Fiyero in the long run Evilwill step into the lead role of Jay Gatsby in Broadway’s The Great Gatsby from 21 January 2025.

McCartan succeeds Jeremy Jordan, who will play his final performance at the Broadway Theater on January 19.

Based on the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald novel, The Great Gatsby contains music and lyrics by Nathan Tysen (Paradise Square) and Jason Howland (Beautiful: The Carole King Musical) and a book by Jonathan Larson Grant winner Kait Kerrigan (The crazy ones). Marc Bruni (Beautiful: The Carole King Musical) directs with choreography by Dominique Kelley (Mariah’s Magical Christmas Special).

Set in the roaring 20s, the musical follows eccentric millionaire Jay Gatsby who will stop at nothing in his tragic pursuit of Daisy Buchanan, a wealthy young woman he loved in his youth.

The Broadway cast is led by Jordan (News) as Jay Gatsby and Eva Noblezada (Hadestown) as Daisy Buchanan with Noah J. Ricketts (Frozen) as Nick Carraway, Sara Chase (The unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) as Myrtle, Samantha Pauly (Six) as Jordan Baker, John Zdrojeski (Good night Oscar) as Tom Buchanan, Charlie Pollock (Urinetown) as George Wilson and Eric Anderson (Moulin Rouge! The Musical) as Wolfsheim.

The Great Gatsby will also kick off the 100th anniversary of the novel on January 16, when the musical hosts a benefit in partnership with The New York Public Library celebrating the 100th anniversary of the novel’s publication. The evening begins with a gala performance starring Jordan and Noblezada, culminating in a party at The New York Public Library with all proceeds benefiting the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. The evening will also toast the final week of performances for original star Jordan and the passing of the torch to McCartan.

The Great Gatsby also features scenic and projection design by Paul Tate de Poo III, costume design by Linda Cho, sound design by Brian Ronan, lighting design by Cory Pattak, and hair and wig design by Charles G. LaPointe and Rachael Geier.

The arrangements are by Jason Howland, the orchestrations are by Howland and Kim Scharnberg, the music director is Daniel Edmonds, and the music producer is Grammy winner Billy Jay Stein for Strike Audio.

Casting is by C12 Casting and the production manager is Brian Bogin. Mark Shacket of Foresight Theatrical serves as executive producer.

The new musical won the 2024 Tony Award for Best Costume Design of a Musical.
