What happens in the How to Train Your Dragon live-action trailer?

Like the 2010 animated film, the live-action How to Train Your Dragon trailer introduces audiences to Thames’ Hiccup, a Viking whose father, played by Butler, insists he grow up and learn how to slay dragons. Hiccup intends to do so when he finds an injured Night Fury dragon, who eventually becomes known as Toothless; but he is unable to do so and sets Toothless free, after which Toothless then allows Hiccup to touch his face.

“On the harsh island of Berk, where Vikings and dragons have been bitter enemies for generations, Hiccup (Mason Thames; The Black Phone, For All Mankind) stands out. The resourceful but overlooked son of Chief Stoick the Stort (Gerard Butler, reprising his voice role from the animated franchise), Hiccup defies centuries of tradition when he befriends Toothless, a feared Night Fury dragon,” reads the film’s synopsis. “Their unlikely bond reveals the dragons’ true nature and challenges the very foundations of Viking society.”

Butler previously voiced Stoick the Vast in the first two animated How to Train Your Dragon films, the second of which, How to Train Your Dragon 2, was released in 2014. There was also a third film, How to Train Your Dragon : The Hidden World, which was released in 2019.

The film, which is also loosely based on the book series by Cressida Cowell, is written, directed and produced by Dean DeBlois, who co-directed the first How to Train Your Dragon film with Chris Sanders before directing the two sequels himself . .

The film’s cast also includes Nick Frost as Gobber the Blech, Julian Dennison as Fishlegs Ingerman, Gabriel Howell as Snotlout Jorgenson, Bronwyn James as Ruffnut Thorston, Harry Trevaldwyn as Tuffnut Thorston and Ruth Codd as Phlegma.

The live-action How to Train Your Dragon movie will be released in US theaters on June 13, 2025 from Universal Pictures.
