Chad Michael Murray teases ‘So Much Life’ in Freaky Friday sequel

Not to make you feel like the keeper of the crypt, but it’s been more than 20 years since “Freaky Friday” hit theaters. For Chad Michael Murray, returning for the upcoming sequel only made it that much more fun and “full circle.”

Murray played greasy rocker Jake in the original film, which Anna (Lindsay Lohan) was completely smitten with. He liked her too. He just didn’t realize it because he started falling for Anna’s mother Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis) without realizing that the two had switched bodies. In the end, however, it succeeds, and he becomes the “ultimate” muse.

Now Murray is returning to reprise the role for the 2025 sequel. While speaking with TheWrap for his new Netflix Christmas movie “The Merry Gentlemen,” the actor recalled how excited everyone was to be back for another ride with Disney.

“So much energy, so much life,” he shared. “It’s such a full circle, great moment to come back with everybody. I mean, that’s almost where I started. 25 years ago I started, it was like 23 years ago when we shot it.”

Murray wouldn’t give much away in terms of the plot — including whether or not he’ll be screaming Britney Spears’ karaoke again — but he loved delving into what’s been going on with the characters and promised a reveal about Jake was imminent.

“It was exciting to try to build up, like, what was your life for the last 23 years for this character? You know, where has Jake gone?” he said. “Or more importantly, what’s Jake’s last name? You will find out.”

“The Merry Gentlemen” arrives on Netflix on November 20. “Freakier Friday” is set to hit theaters on August 6, 2025.
