Nearly 80 million Americans are expected to travel this year — 1.7 million more than last year and two million more than 2019, according to AAA.

“Thanksgiving is the busiest holiday for travel, and this year we expect to set new records across the board, from driving to flying and cruising,” Stacey Barber, vice president of AAA Travel, said in a statement. “Americans reconnect with family and friends over Thanksgiving, and travel is a big part of that. Air travelers should prepare for long lines at US airports as the number of airline seats scheduled for the Thanksgiving travel period this year is up 4.8% over last, according to Hopper’s 2024 Thanksgiving Outlook and Busiest Airports.

The busiest day for flights will be Sunday, December 1, while the least busy day will be Thanksgiving Day, November 28; Black Friday, November 29; and Tuesday 3 December

For Thanksgiving week, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and Denver International Airport are expected to be the busiest airports, especially in the morning between 8 and noon, according to Hopper.

After Thanksgiving, the best driving times will be early morning or late evening. Travelers should aim to hit the road after 1pm Friday 29 November; before 1 pm on Saturday 30 November and Sunday 1 December and before 8 am or after 7 pm on Monday 2 December.

“With record numbers of travelers expected to be on the road, drivers should follow traffic apps and local news alerts to avoid major delays,” Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX, said in a statement.
