Right-wingers rage over ad with Black actress

‘Tis the season again: when angry right-wingers get mad over so-called ‘woke’ Christmas adverts. This time, the British retail chain Boots is in the firing line – and outraged bigots are even calling for a boycott.

The healthcare company recently released their new Christmas ad, starring black actress Adjoa Andoh as Mrs. Claus as she gets organized for Christmas.

It begins with Andoh’s Mrs. Claus entering her living room only to find her husband Santa Claus asleep in front of the fire. So she takes matters into her own hands and gets her “elfluencers,” including social media stars @soph and @snatchedbywill – to help.

What’s more, at one point she even uses (gasp!) they/them pronouns to refer to someone who, as you can imagine, has the anti-vigilante brigade thoroughly up their sleeves.

Far-right group Britain First – which was banned by Facebook in 2018 – has launched a petition calling on its loyal followers to boycott Boots over the ad, calling it “sick”, but not in the funny gay way. They also use defamatory language to refer to Andoh, falsely describing her as an “anti-white racist.”

It begins: “Boots has just launched a sickeningly rousing Christmas advert featuring notoriously anti-white racist actress ‘Adjoa Andoh’ (who described the British Royal Family as ‘Terribly White’) as ‘Mrs Claus’.

“The ad also promotes ‘They/Them’ transgender pronouns, a concept created by far-left LGBT movements in an attempt to undermine traditional gender norms, biological sex, and the traditional Christian family.

“Santa is the only straight white man in the entire ad, and he is deliberately portrayed as a lazy nerd.”

Adjoa Andoh is an incredibly talented British actress who has performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre, the Royal Court Theater and the Almeida Theatre, as well as (of course) portraying Lady Danbury in the magnificent Netflix period drama. Bridgerton.

During King Charles’ coronation, Andoh appeared as a guest commentator for ITV, noting that the Buckingham Palace balcony looked “horribly white” in contrast to the “rich diversity of the cloister.”

Ofcom received over 8,000 complaints about Andoh’s remarks but took no action against ITV.

Following the release of the ad and the Britain First petition, #BoycottBoots started trending on X, but plenty of people mocked the right-wing “snowflakes” for being all over what many referred to as a “fabulous, funny, witty” and warm ” Christmas ad.

Last year, an M&S ad also sparked anger among the right-wing. The festive ad used the slogan ‘Love Thismas (Not Thatmas)‘ and focuses on finding the balance between doing what we actually enjoy at Christmas and what we feel obligated to do.

However, the playful ad did not please racists and homophobes, who slammed the retailer as “woke” for “trying to cancel Christmas” and for daring to single out gay and black people.

In response to the backlash against its ad, a Boots spokesman said MailOnline: “We recognize that people look forward to seeing our Christmas ad every year and want their own opinions on the creative direction.

“Our latest ad stars Adjoa Andoh, who is an incredibly talented British actor known for his starring role in the popular show Bridgerton and several other hit productions.

“We always strive to create inclusive campaigns and remind viewers that Boots has something for every kind of beauty enthusiast. We strongly oppose any form of discrimination.”
