Taylor vs. Serrano 2

It was the rematch years in the making: Undisputed super lightweight champion Katie Taylor stepped back into the ring against unified featherweight champion Amanda “The Real Deal” Serrano. In a spectacular 2022 bout, pound-for-pound stars Taylor and Serrano made history as the first female fighters ever to headline a sold-out Madison Square Garden. The fight ended in a narrow split decision in favor of Taylor, and both fighters were given credit Sports Illustrated‘s Fight of the Year and The ringEvent of the year for 2022.

On November 15, the pair opened old wounds – literally – in one of the most brutal boxing matches in modern history. In the final round, Taylor landed a right and a left, but Serrano took control. Taylor continued to fight back with a ferocious two-handed attack. She took a heavy body shot but answered with a powerful counter that shook the ring. In the end, Taylor remains the undisputed super lightweight champion of the world after all three judges scored the fight 95-94 in her favor.

UNDER CARD

In an electrifying WBC Welterweight Championship bout, reigning champion Mario “El Azteca” Barrios retained his title against Abel Ramos by way of a split draw after 12 full rounds. The pair threw a combined 1,500 pitches during the match.

Barrios is a rising star in the world of boxing, known for his fierce fighting style and deep connection to his Mexican heritage. He captured his first world title in 2019, defeating Batyr Akhmedov and later moved up to welterweight where he faced top contenders, including a memorable bout against Gervonta “Tank” Davis in 2021. After securing a dominant victory over Fabian Andres Maidana in his last outing as co-main event in Canelo vs. Munguia, he now returns to the ring to face Ramos. “Abel Ramos is a tough Mexican fighter, like me,” Barrios told Netflix ahead of the Nov. 15 release. “Don’t miss this match – it’s going to be war, puro San Antonio!”

Ramos is a ruthless welterweight from Casa Grande, Arizona, known for his exciting fights and relentless determination in the ring. He began his amateur career at the age of 13 and transitioned to the professional ranks in 2011, quickly building a reputation by taking on formidable opponents such as Ivan Baranchyk and Regis Prograis. This was Ramos’ second World Cup opportunity. “I’m very excited to fight for the WBC title and I’m looking forward to a great fight against Mario Barrios,” Ramos told Netflix before the fight. “He’s a warrior just like me.”

Also on the card for the boxing mega event was Neeraj Goyat, India’s no. 1 boxer and MVP’s first international signing, and Brazil’s multi-talented superstar Whindersson Nunes. Goyat made his MVP debut against Nunes in a professional six-round super middleweight bout. Goyat won the fight by unanimous decision and a comprehensive 60-54 margin with 481 punches thrown, 171 landed.

Goyat began his amateur boxing career in 2006 and quickly began his rise to the top. He won the WBC Asia title in 2015, 2016 and 2017 and was the first ever Indian boxer to reach the WBC World Rankings. “I couldn’t be more excited to make my MVP debut at what promises to be the biggest boxing event in history,” Goyat told Netflix.

Nunes is a Brazilian icon and social media superstar with a massive following online. He boasts a cumulative 2-2-1 record in his boxing career with 1 KO. Known for his charismatic presence both in and out of the ring, Nunes has faced notable opponents, including his 2022 fight against legendary world champion Acelino “PopĆ³” Freitas, which went the distance over eight rounds and resulted in a draw for the fighters. “I grew up watching big names in boxing, so it’s an honor to have the opportunity to be a part of this card and challenge myself in this sport,” Nunes said.
