INDIANAPOLIS – Many in Indianapolis are without power Friday.

Outages started coming shortly after 1 p.m. 1 p.m. and quickly reached 15,715 AES Indiana customers, mostly in the northeast part of the city. That number jumped to 26,000 at 1:30 p.m

AES said it is “actively addressing a large-scale power outage in the northeast quadrant of the city. Crews are working to restore service to all affected customers with safety as our top priority,” according to a post from the company on social media X .

The outage was caused by a fault in a substation, the company said in a statement. Most customers had power restored within 30 minutes.

Crews had lowered the number of customers without power to about 4,500 by 2 p.m. Thirty minutes later, about 3,700 customers remained without power.

The outages were mostly concentrated in neighborhoods along Binford Boulevard heading northeast into the Castleton area and extending to Geist, but Mapleton-Fall Creek and the Indiana State Fairgrounds also reported power losses.

The outage briefly affected Community Hospital North, according to a spokesperson. By 1:50 p.m., power was restored, according to a AES outcome card online. The hospital has backup power for medical equipment and emergency lighting, the spokesman added.

The Fairgrounds said all events were temporarily closed due to the outage.
