Broken chair trophy returns for Husker volleyball game against Minnesota

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – It’s a sports tradition now celebrating its 10th year, with more than $175,000 raised for good causes, but this time it comes with a twist.

After its internet startup in 2014the famous ‘bits of broken chair’ trophy has been presented to the winner of the Nebraska-Minnesota football game each year.

But taking a look at the schedule, the Huskers and Gophers are not playing on the gridiron this year. Therefore, on Thursday evening, the trophy will instead pave the way to the Devaney Center’s volleyball court.

Since 2017, the base between the two teams has also been a way of raising money, with each fanbase raising money for their respective causes.

Here in Nebraska, these donations go to Team Jack Foundationwhich raises money for pediatric brain cancer research.

Lindsey Nemetz, the foundation’s director of marketing, said pediatric brain cancer is a leading cause of death in children, and Nebraska ranks No. 7 nationally in cases.

“The Team Jack Foundation started because of just generous Nebraskans donating to help a cause,” Nemetz said. “We’ve really come through because of people who have started collections like the broken chair.”

On the Minnesota side is Team One Four Fund has raised money for M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis.
