Vini Jr. penalty miss haunts Brazil in Venezuela draw

CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifying continues on Thursday night with a trio of games across South America.

Here’s what’s gone down so far.

Venezuela 1-1 Brazil

Scorers: Segovia 46′; Raphinha 43′

A miss from Vinicius Junior’s second-half penalty saw Venezuela hold on to share the points with Brazil in Monagas.

The two teams traded chances in the opening half of the game and if it wasn’t for some heroic defending and goalkeeping, it could have been a high-scoring affair.

But it took until the dying minutes of the half for the deadlock to be broken, and it was done in style as Raphinha kissed a free-kick off the post before celebrating Neymar while donning his number 10 shirt.

However, the visitors’ lead would not last long as Telasco Segovia reluctantly fired home the equalizer just three minutes into the second break.

Brazil had the chance to find the winner after the hour mark when Vinicius Junior was brought down in the box, but Real Madrid saw his poor penalty attempt saved.

While Venezuela might have looked to find a late winner, their efforts were undone when Alexander González was sent off in the dying minutes.

The shared points means Brazil move into third place so far, while Venezuela remain in seventh place.
