Over 512,000 electric space heaters recalled due to fire, burn hazards

The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall Thursday of 512,500 Govee and GoveeLife electric space heaters due to overheating problems that increase the risk of fire or burns. Tests on the devices have determined that the smart space heaters do not comply with the voluntary industry safety standard, UL 1278, which poses an overheating threat.

The space heaters were sold in black and white and measure, depending on the model, from 9 inches to 26 inches in height. The units have the words “Govee” or “GoveeLife” on the front or side of the space heater.

The following model numbers are affected by the recall: H7130 (including the H7130101 variant), H7131, H7132, H7133, H7134 and H7135. The model numbers can be found on the manufacturer’s label on the underside of each unit.

Govee is aware of 113 reports of devices overheating, including seven fires as a result of the problem and one report of a minor burn. The space heaters were sold on Amazon, the Govee app and the TikTok store from September 2021 to September 2024 for between $30 and $150.

Owners of the recalled space heaters are advised to immediately stop using the product and contact the company for a refund. To receive a refund, the CPSC says you must unplug the electric space heater, cut the power cord, and send a photo of the broken electric space heater, the manufacturer’s label and SN code on the bottom or side of the unit to the company. You can possibly submit your claim through the company’s recall website.

If you don’t have the original order number, owners can expect to receive a refund from $31.80 to $106.63, depending on their device. If you have the original order number, you will receive a full refund of the purchase price. You can typically find the order number in your purchase records from where the device was purchased.

Along with 512,500 units recalled in the United States, another 48,600 units were recalled in Canada.
