Veterans Day is a time to remember all those who served in the US military, both past and present.

While Memorial Day honors those who gave their lives in service to the country, Veterans Day honors all those who served.

Banks, post offices and many businesses throughout Michigan will close their doors Veterans Day on Monday, November 11 to honor the millions of people who have served. Commemorations and ceremonies will take place across the country and around the world.

What is closed on Veterans Day? What is open?

Federal Government Offices and Courts: Federal courts and non-essential government offices will be closed Monday for Veterans Day when the federal holiday is observed. Federal offices include Veterans Affairs offices, courthouses, Social Security offices and other locations.

Garbage collection: Some trash and recycling collections may be delayed on Mondays or moved to another day in some cities. Ask your local providers.

Local authorities: City and county offices will be closed.

National parks: To honor veterans, national parks will remain open and be free to all visitors on Monday.

Restaurants: Most restaurants will be open, and some chains like Applebee’s, Olive Garden and Starbucks will be offering free meals or treats to veterans and active duty service members in appreciation of their service.

Schools: Some schools will be closed. Check with your local district.

Supermarkets and retail: Most grocery and retail businesses will remain open on Veterans Day. Some stores may have reduced opening hours.

Are banks open on Veterans Day?

While banks are not required to close on the holidays designated by the Federal Reserve System, many will be closed on Monday, including branches of Bank of Americathe Federal Reserve Bank and others. Many credit unions are also close to personal service. Any banking you do online on a holiday will not start processing until then next weekday.

Is there mail delivery on Veterans Day?

The post offices are closed, and there will be no regular mail delivery on Monday. However, UPS will continue package delivery and stores will remain open, with possible minor delays for UPS SurePost and UPS Mail Innovations due to the USPS holiday. FedEx will also remain open with modified service for FedEx Smart Post.

Why is Veterans Day celebrated on November 11?

The federal holiday November 11 links back to the end of World War I and marks when Germany and the Allies signed a 1918 agreement to end hostilities. The fighting ceased at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

November 11, 1918 was then considered the end of the “war to end all wars”, according to US Department of Veterans Affairs.

In 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first observance of Armistice Day to commemorate and observe the end of hostilities with parades, public meetings and a “brief suspension of the commencement of business.”
