Social Security announces 2 new changes to 2025 payments

In less than two months is Social Security Administration will begin providing monthly benefits to more than 70 million beneficiaries in 2025. However, some of these Social Security checks will not be mailed on the usual dates, specifically for those beneficiaries who qualify for the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. According to the SSA, this is a financial program intended to help low-income seniors over age 65, the disabled, or children in specific financial circumstances. If you would like to know more about the upcoming payment dates for 2025, you can read more about the monthly payment plan here.

Social Security confirmed two changes to 2025 payments

Each month, the federal agency delivers five sets of payments to Retirement, Survivors and Disability Insurance (RSDI) recipients and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) programs. Based on this schedule, beneficiaries receive their payments subject to the following conditions:

  • If they qualify for the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program, they will all receive their monthly benefits on the first day of the month, regardless of their date of birth.
  • Retired workers, survivors and the disabled will receive their payments based on the date they claimed their first benefit.
    • On the third day of the month for those beneficiaries who claimed before May 1997
    • On the second, third and fourth Wednesday for recipients who claimed after May 1997.

It is important to note that these payment dates may vary depending on holidays or weekends. According to Payment plan for social security 2025January and February will see a slight change in the regular payment dates for these months, as SSI recipients will receive their benefits from the first of February on January 31 and those from March 1 on February 28. The reason for these prepayments is that when a regular payment date falls on a holiday or weekend, SSA will reschedule that date to the previous business day to avoid jeopardizing recipients’ financial budgets.
