Vice President Kamala Harris canceled a planned speech at an election night party but had not yet conceded defeat early Wednesday after former President Donald Trump was elected to a second term.

Trump defeated Harris by capturing at least 270 of the electoral votes needed to win the presidency. His numbers may rise as more votes are tallied.

On Tuesday night, Harris was expected to speak at her election night party at Howard University in Washington, DC, a historically black college where she was an undergraduate.

“We still have votes to count. We still have states that haven’t been called yet. We’re going to continue through the night to fight to make sure that every vote is counted, that every vote is counted,” Harris’ campaign chairman Cedric Richmond said Tuesday evening. “So you’re not hearing from the vice president tonight, but you’re hearing from her tomorrow.”

Howard alumni, Democratic activists, Biden administration officials and Harris supporters had packed school yard, where inspirational figures like the late South African President Nelson Mandela, former US President Barack Obama and talk show host Oprah Winfrey have given speeches over the years in hopes of seeing Harris speak on Tuesday night.
