‘Woke up this morning with a dream… Going to bed with a nightmare’

CNN political commentator Van Jones was on the verge of tears Tuesday night as the 2024 presidential race continued to slip away from Vice President Kamala Harris.

“I’m thinking about the people who are not part of anybody’s elite who are hurting tonight,” Jones told his fellow former presidents. Donald Trump approached victory:

There are African-American women who know a little about being talked down to, they know a little about having their financial dreams crushed, who have been trying to dream a big dream for the past few months, and tonight they’re dealing with a lot of hope for a lot of hurt, and they hoped that maybe this time, this time, one of their own could be seen as worthy. And once again they face rejection and it hurts.

They thought tomorrow morning they would walk out with their shoulders back a little, maybe be able to breathe for the first time and feel like they belong somewhere. They did everything they knew how to do and it’s going to be harder than it should be tomorrow for them to hold their heads up and they’re not the only people hurting tonight. If you are the parent of a trans child, your child’s face was used as a springboard to power for someone. It doesn’t feel good.

He continued, “There’s going to be people tomorrow dropping off clothes at the dryers for people who don’t have papers. There’s going to be people cleaning your teeth tomorrow who don’t have papers. And they’re scared tonight. “

Jones concluded, “So it’s easy to blow this off, ‘Oh, look at the elites, they’re going to get their fill.’ It is not the elite who are going to pay the price. These are people who woke up this morning with a dream and go to bed with a nightmare.”

As Jones made his remarks, CNN’s election results tracker showed Trump with 246 electoral votes to Harris’ 187. CNN’s tracker also showed Trump with 51.2% of the popular vote to Harris’ 47.2%.

Jones is no stranger to nearly tearing up live on-air. In July alone, the CNN commentator choked on the president twice Joe Biden’s cancellation of the race. A few weeks before, Jones was on the verge of tears while suggesting that Biden should be replaced.

In November 2020, Jones also broke down in tears after Biden was declared the winner of the 2020 presidential election.
