Fentanyl bust seized enough drugs to kill a quarter of California’s population: the police

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A recent routine traffic stop along Interstate 5 in Northern California turned into a massive fentanyl bust.

The California Highway Patrol says in late October, officers stopped someone for a traffic violation near Airport Boulevard.

While the stop started out routine, officers say things quickly escalated when a K9 from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office sniffed out possible drugs in the car.

Two duffel bags and a shopping bag full of fake M30 pellets were then found, the officers say; more than 66 pounds, equivalent to about 330,000 pills, were seized.

Officers arrested the driver and booked the Washington State resident into the Yolo County Jail.

The CHP noted that the amount of pills seized in this one arrest, where just a few milligrams of fentanyl is lethal, is enough to kill about a quarter of California’s population.
