What Anthony Volpe’s mother thought about her son’s historic night

Anthony Volpe hugged his mother Isabelle in the hallway outside the Yankees clubhouse not long after delivering the biggest hit of his life — and the biggest of this Yankees season.

Volpe’s grand slam in the bottom of the third propelled the Yankees to an 11-4 Game 4 victory over the Dodgers to extend the World Series — adding another milestone to what has been an incredible path for the New York City native, who grew up in New Jersey dreaming of playing for the Yankees.

And his parents, Isabelle and Michael, were in the family section at the Stadium to see it.

“It’s so surreal,” Isabelle said Tuesday night. “We were rooting for the Yankees before he was born. It’s all a trip. We took him to all those events, spent money to meet (Derek) Jeter when he was eight years old, and he wouldn’t even get up to him because he was too shy. Now he’s out there doing it…”

Not only were they there, but Isabelle said Michael saw the grand slam coming from the family section.

“My husband said he better swing at the first pitch because it’s going to be a fastball,” Isabelle said. “And then, ‘Boom.’ We just looked at each other and there was beer flying in the air and everyone was hugging. It was pandemonium.”

The pitch was a Daniel Hudson slider, but Volpe was really looking for a fastball.

Volpe’s grandfather, also called Anthony, also witnessed the explosion.

“We needed a big hit, the whole team needed it, and he gave it to them,” senior Volpe said. “You couldn’t hear yourself think that.”

To top it off, the entire crowd started chanting “Volpe” later in the game as the Yankees were on their way to taking Game 5, also in The Bronx.

“It’s overwhelming to say the least,” Isabelle Volpe. “I can only imagine how he feels. We’ve been holding each other through it all. You dream about it, everyone dreams about it, but nobody thinks it will happen. His hard work, determination and so much support has all led to this crazy time.”
