game

For the first time in 30 years, there is Georgia football in Sanford Stadium tonight – on a day other than Saturday.

The Bulldogs play in-state rival Georgia Tech in the first Friday game between the teams since 1994.

“It’s the last home night game and the last home game of the season,” center Jared Wilson said. “Hopefully it’s loud and fun like Saturdays.”

Of course, there’s still a chance that 9-2 Georgia ends up hosting a playoff game, but that game is the focus now for the Bulldogs.

“It’s an in-state championship for me,” said Georgia inside linebacker CJ Allen, who hails from Lamar County High in Barnesville. “I’ve never won a championship in high school. I’ve never been to a state championship, so being a Georgia kid is like a state championship for me.”

Bulldogs, no. 8 in the coaches’ poll and no. 7 in the CFP rankings, treated Thanksgiving Day as they usually do on a Friday before a game, which meant having a Thanksgiving meal together. They practiced their normal Wednesday practice on Tuesday.

“This is a strap it on, punch somebody in the mouth, keys, pass kind of game,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said. “They know it is, we know it is. No way around it.”

Georgia Tech took the lead on a 31-yard Aidan Birr field goal. Running back Jamal Haynes went 44 yards on the opening play on the outside after Georgia appeared to have him bottled up inside, but the Bulldogs defense stiffened.

Haynes King took the snaps pregame from starting center Weston Franklin, while freshman Aaron Philo took the no. 2 shots. Kelly Quinlan of Rivals.com, according to a post on the UGASports message board, had several people tell him that Philo, from Prince Avenue Christian, will redshirt and not play tonight “barring a dire emergency.”

We’ll see.

While the running back room turns continues for Georgia. The latest injury is freshman Chauncey Bowens, who is undressed and wearing a boot on his left foot. Of course, leading rusher Trevor Etienne is out again with his rib injury.

Bowens has 58 rushing yards on 16 carries. He had 31 yards on five carries against UMass.

Running backs Roderick Robinson, who has been sidelined all season with a toe injury, and Branson Robinson, who has missed time with a knee injury, are warming up for the second week in a row. They didn’t play last week

After missing the UMass game last week with a hamstring injury, Anthony Evans is practicing punt returns on the field now, but he’s behind Malaki Starks. We’ll see who Georgia uses in that spot tonight.

Georgia wide receiver Dillon Bell goes through pregame warmups after missing last week’s game with an ankle injury. He caught passes in the end zone with other receivers and just went on a route at less than full speed, making a one-handed catch. Follow along. UPDATE: He just ran a route at full speed. Looks fine.

The Thanksgiving weekend and the rare Friday night date could dampen the mood of the home crowd tonight. Students are relatively slow to fill up their sections so far. The tailgate and traffic seemed to be more subdued than usual. The cold weather doesn’t help.

The referee tonight is Jeff Heaser. He worked the Georgia game at Miss Ole three weeks ago. It didn’t go well for Georgia, but the Rebels had a lot to do with it.

Georgia’s game captains tonight are quarterback Carson Beck, inside linebacker Smael Mondon, offensive guard Tate Ratledge and outside linebacker Chaz Chambliss.

Thankfully, the new press box here at Sanford Stadium is closed. It feels like Big Ten weather a few hours before kickoff with the wind blowing hard and the temperature dipping into the 40s.
