Florida basketball have gotten off to a solid start to 2024-25, winning all six games by 13 points or more.

No. 16 Florida Gators (6-0) faces a more significant test this week when it begins play at the ESPN Events Invitational on Thursday against Wake Forest in Kissimmee, Fla.

After Wake Forest, Florida will play either Minnesota or Wichita State on Friday at 13.30 or 15.30.

“These 48 hours down in Orlando will give us a good experience to see what we’re made of in a different environment,” Florida basketball coach Todd Golden said. “Playing two games back-to-back, whether it’s SEC tournament preparation or kind of like the NCAA tournament, where you have to play a team on short rest that didn’t have a lot of time to prepare for you either. on that second day.”

Florida will look to avenge an 82-71 loss at Wake Forest last season in the ACC-SEC Challenge. The Demon Deacons (6-1) return two starters from last year’s squad, including guard Hunter Sallis, who scored 24 points against UF last season.

“We played in their (gym) last year, so I think everybody coming back carries a chip on their shoulder,” Florida forward Alex Condon said. “It’s something we really need this game, it’s a start to hopefully a little. run the next few weeks when we have a tough schedule.”

The Gators have been followed by the high-scoring backcourt tandem of Walter Clayton Jr. (16.5 ppg) and Alijah Martin (16.7 ppg), who is coming off a 32-point effort in UF’s 93-68 win over Southern Illinois on Friday. A transfer from FAU, Martin has gelled quickly with his new teammates at UF.

“His ability on the floor is really, really good,” Golden said. “He’s given us a little bit — he’s added some toughness to our team this year, you know, just with the way he competes and his physicality defensively.”
