Jana Kramer’s husband was ‘confused’ by her masked singer post

Jana Kramer have wanted to be on The Masked Singer since it debuted in 2019 – but her husband, Allan Russellwas somewhat more skeptical of the singing competition show.

“I was so excited when I got the text, I was sitting there with my husband on the couch,” Kramer, 40, told Exclusive. Us Weekly ahead of her elimination from the Fox series on Thursday, November 28. “I just started screaming and my husband said, ‘What?’ And I say, ‘I’ve just been offered The Masked Singer.’ And he says, “What?” And I’m like ‘The Masked Singer. Don’t you know what that is?’”

Kramer – whose costume was the royal knight – continued to show Russell, 43, clips from the show, which she often watches with her children, but he was still a bit thrown by footage of contestants performing in huge, elaborate costumes.

“He says, ‘And you want to do it?'” Kramer recalled. “And I say, ‘Yes, I do. Like 1,000 percent!’ He was confused … but I was so, so excited.”

While Russell wasn’t up to date on Masked Singer lore, Kramer’s kids were on board with her decision to do the show — and nearly blew up her spot with their friends. (Kramer shares daughter Jolie, 8, and son Jace, 5, with her ex-husband Mike Caussinwhile she and Russell welcomed son Roman in November 2023.)

“They told their friends at school, they said, ‘Hey, you should really watch The Masked Singer,” Kramer said with a laugh. “And I was like, ‘Jolie, you can’t say that. You can’t tell them it’s mum.’ She said, ‘I’m not, mother! I just say, ‘You know, you should really see it.'”

While Kramer’s kids have always known it was their mom under the Royal Knight mask, her other family members didn’t — and she was excited to finally spill the beans with this week’s special Thanksgiving episode. However, one person immediately guessed that Kramer was on the show.

“My sister-in-law texted me last week and said, ‘When are you going to tell us you have an alter ego named Royal Knight?'” the “Whine Down” host shared. “So they slowly figured it out and most of the time I was just playing dumb.”

Although Kramer signed on The Masked Singer partly to make her family smile, the experience also ended up bringing her some unexpected joy. She has released two of her own albums and several singles, but singing as Royal Knight gave her more faith in her talents.

“I feel like I allowed myself to have so much more fun being in a mask,” Kramer explained. “I just have to go out there and really just be me. I feel like a lot of times when I go out on stage — I’m not a shy person, but I’m like, ‘Oh, man, I want to make sure that I hitting every single note.’ Like I never hit every note but I feel like I’m more insecure But when I was out there making The Masked Singerit’s like i felt so confident and i was having fun. I think I was missing that when I go on stage other times.”
