Winter storm watches issued for Jefferson, Lewis counties

WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – There is the potential for heavy snowfall on the lake this weekend in parts of the Northland.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch from Friday afternoon through Monday morning for Jefferson, Lewis and Oswego counties.

As many people travel for the Thanksgiving holiday, the NWS says narrow bands of heavy snow effect on the lake can cause rapidly changing road conditions and visibility.

The weather service says there is “significant uncertainty” about exactly where those snow bands will be and how much snow will fall. 7NEWS’ John Kubis agrees, saying it’s too early to know how the wind will blow and take this snow. (He’ll update us on the news at 6pm tonight.)

The NWS has issued winter storm watches for other areas of the state, including western and central New York this weekend.

Governor Kathy Hochul on Tuesday urged New Yorkers to be alert, monitor the weather forecast and use caution while traveling.

“We are preparing to deploy additional snow removal equipment and personnel, support staff and have put the National Guard on standby. If you are traveling, please plan ahead and prioritize your safety and the safety of others to ensure we can all spend this holiday with our loved ones – safe and warm,” she said in a prepared statement.
