Driver charged after killing hospital employee on crosswalk in Spartanburg

SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) – The Spartanburg Police Department is charging a driver Tuesday after a pedestrian was struck and killed while trying to cross a roadway.

Officers report that a pedestrian who worked at Spartanburg Regional Hospital was walking in a crosswalk from the Physician Center to the main hospital near the intersection of East Wood Street and North Church Street at 10 p.m. 8.40.

A black Chevrolet Tahoe SUV was traveling east on East Wood Street and struck the pedestrian while she was in the middle of the crosswalk, police said.

According to officers, the pedestrian was treated at the scene by first responders and later died at the hospital from his injuries.

The Spartanburg County Medical Examiner identified the victim as 58-year-old Mayita Cocio.

Police say the driver of the vehicle was not injured and will be charged with driving while blocked and failure to yield to a pedestrian.
