Time, TV for the Maui Invitational

game

Everything is a little bit better in Hawaii. And that’s especially true for college basketball.

Michigan State basketball will face Colorado in its return to the Maui Invitational for the sixth time, with the last appearance coming in 2019.

The Spartans have a long history of playing in college basketball’s premier fall invitational game, with their first appearance back in 1991. Tom Izzo also made his MSU coaching debut in Maui back in 1995 in a win over Chaminade, and this will be Izzo’s fifth appearance in the Maui Invitational.

MSU is coming off two very tough wins over two low-major opponents, first beating Bowling Green, 86-72, then escaping against a scrappy Samford team, 83-75.

Since the Samford win, all the talk has been about how those hard-fought victories have helped prepare the Spartans for the different types of games they will face going forward, starting this week in Maui. Izzo and the Spartans carefully selected their November opponents to try and get a good challenge, and while the showings were far from perfect, the mood at Breslin seems to be that the games will pay off very soon.

Monday’s game against Colorado is the first of a guaranteed three games in three days, with the Spartans’ opponents still to be determined based on how the games go. But if both MSU and UConn win on Monday, it means the Spartans will have a matchup with the back-to-back defending national champions on Tuesday.
