Minecraft comes to the real world in new attractions

The best-selling video game of all time is about to jump off the screen.

Merlin entertainment and Mojang Studios are collaborating to build the first real-world Minecraft attractions. Merlin owns LEGOLAND Parks, Sea Life Aquariums, Madame Tussauds and more. Microsoft owns Minecraft creator Mojang Studios.

According to a joint press release Tuesday, the new Minecraft attractions will feature digitally enabled, immersive, real-world experiences and “touchpoints that will allow guests to unlock exclusive in-game content to continue their gaming journey.”

The first two attractions are scheduled to debut in the US and UK between 2026 and 2027.

“This will include the development of first-of-its-kind concepts for Minecraft-themed guest accommodation, retail and food and beverage, along with exciting experiences – including a Minecraft-themed ride – at Merlin locations in these two countries,” according to the publication.

More destinations are planned down the line. Merlin Entertainment CEO Scott O’Neil said they include “theme parks and downtown attractions in leading tourist destinations,” but did not offer specific location details. Merlin is investing more than $110 million in the first two.

“This initial investment is just the beginning and replicates Merlin’s proven approach to globally launching new concepts and platforms, which we have done with LEGO, Peppa Pig, Sony Pictures, CBeebies and others,” O’Neil said in a statement.

This is the first time that Merlin has collaborated with a gaming brand.

O’Neil notes that Minecraft, which celebrated its 15th anniversary last May, has the largest gaming community in the world.
