Man Utd legend Roy Keane breaks two of his own rules after sharing five-word message in rare social media post

Roy Keane appeared to backtrack on two of his claims after the Manchester United legend caught the eye of fans with his latest Instagram activity.

The 53-year-old Manchester United legend is widely regarded as one of the best captains and midfielders in Premier League history.

A commanding box-to-box midfielder in his prime, Roy Keane arrived at Old Trafford in 1993 after United signed him from Nottingham Forest for a fee of £3.75m.

The former United midfielder excelled in the middle of the park for Sir Alex Ferguson and rose to the captaincy following Eric Cantona’s sudden retirement in 1997.

During his time at Old Trafford, Keane famously captained United to their iconic treble win in 1999 and was widely admired for his leadership skills.

The former Red Devils captain lifted seven Premier League titles, one Champions League trophy and four FA Cups under former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Keane made 476 appearances for the Red Devils during his remarkable playing career, scoring 51 times and picking up 39 assists for United.

The United legend saw his Old Trafford spell come to an abrupt end in 2005 after he fell out with Ferguson, who fired Keane from the Premier League club.

Man Utd legend Keane posts

Roy Keane saw out the rest of his career at Scottish Celtic before calling time on his legendary playing career in 2006.

The former Nottingham Forest star entered the world of management and coaching after his career, with Keane managing both Sunderland and Ipswich Town.

After his time in coaching, Keane has since become a leading figure for excellence on Sky Sports and a regular addition to The Overlap’s Stick to Football show.

Keane, known for his no-nonsense attitude on and off the pitch, took to Instagram and shared a photo of him alongside legendary comedian Ricky Gervais.

Posting the picture to his 2.2 million followers, Keane wrote: “Good day at the office.”

Keane breaks two rules with Gervais’ photo

Fans in the comments wasted no time pointing out that Keane appeared to be breaking two of his own rules as part of his photo with Ricky Gervais.

Keane was hilarious for producing a smile alongside the iconic former Office star, having previously called smiling one of the three most overrated things.

“The three most overrated things in life – listen to this – parties, smiles and fireworks,” he said on The Overlap’s Stick to Football show in 2023.

“They’re pointless. I’m telling you. I’m never going to a party again. It’s bizarre.”

During another performance at a Overlap videoKeane told United legend Gary Neville about the time he didn’t ask boxing legend Muhammad Ali for a picture.

“Remember when we went to London for the BBC? We got Sports Team of the Year,” he said in 2021.

“Did you get a photograph with Muhammad Ali? Do you remember Muhammad Ali being there?”

The United legend continued: “It would have been the ideal situation if I would (want) to go after somebody, listen. But if you remember the show finished, all the boys went over.

“I remember going; “Leave him alone.” And I’m glad I did. He was an old man. He wasn’t feeling well. But that’s the one I would have gotten a photograph of.”

Keane has now lightened up on his stance over pictures, smiling after his photo opportunity with Gervais.
