USMNT edges Jamaica in Nations League, gives Pochettino first competitive win

United States men’s national team manager Mauricio Pochettino congratulated his team on its 1-0 victory over Jamaica in the first leg of the Concacaf Nations League quarterfinals, although he noted that the United States needed to improve “in all areas.”

The result marked Pochettino’s second win since taking over in September, and his first with the United States in a competitive game.

“The first step is done,” Pochettino said. “I congratulate my players because in a difficult situation they competed really well. I’m so happy. Of course we have to improve in all areas.”

The two teams meet again on Monday in St. Louis to determine who advances to the CNL semifinals in March.

The USA took an early lead through Ricardo Pepififth minute strike. The Americans almost doubled their advantage early, with chances off Anthony Robinson and Christian Pulisic.

Matt Turner played a crucial role in securing the victory, deny Demarai Grey from the penalty spot in the 14th minute after conceding the initial foul.

Although it fell victim to Jamaica’s Shamar Nicholson in the order that led to the penalty kick, central defence Mark McKenzie and Tim Ream made some key defensive plays in the second half to preserve the win, just as it did Yunus Musahwho tackled Mason Holgate’s close-range effort away in the 66th minute.

“I think we defended well in the second half,” Pochettino said. “We concede some chances that Jamaica might score, but I think overall I’m happy with the way the team competed. We didn’t concede. Now we have to prepare for the second game in St. Louis. It’s going to be tough , because Jamaica, like today, shows today that they have very good players.”

Pochettino added that his team will have to learn something from the game.

“It’s easier (to learn) when you win the games,” he said. “You can learn quickly, but I think, yes, hard game. We have to be satisfied and now try to design all the strategy and recovery and be ready for Monday.”
