Eva Longoria Left ‘Dystopian’ America and Won’t Return: ‘It’s a Scary Place’

Eva Longoria decided to leave the United States amid the COVID pandemic, and she has no plans to return now that Donald Trump has been elected to serve a second term as president. She told Marie Clarie for his November cover story that she divides her time between homes in Spain and Mexico; the globalization of entertainment means that she is not required to come to Hollywood to film her acting projects.

“I had my whole adult life here,” Longoria said of Los Angeles. “But even before (the pandemic) it was changing. The mood was different. And then COVID happened and it pushed it over the edge. Whether it’s the homelessness or the taxes, not that I want to shit on California – it just feels like this chapter of my life is finished now.”

“I’m privileged,” Longoria added. “I’m going to escape and go somewhere. Most Americans aren’t so lucky. They’re going to be stuck in this dystopian country, and my anxiety and sadness is for them.”

Longoria hit the campaign trail over the summer in support of Kamala Harris for president. She said that when Trump defeated Hillary Clinton in 2016, she had an existential crisis, explaining: “It was like, ‘Does my vote really matter? Am I really making a difference?’ I was so untethered to the core of it, I think, because I really believed in my soul that the best person wins. And then it happened, and I was like, ‘Oh, wait. The best person doesn’t win.’ “

Now that Trump has won a second presidential election, Longoria is no longer surprised. “The shocking thing is not that he won,” she told Marie Claire two days after Trump’s victory. “It’s that a convicted felon who spews so much hate could hold the highest office.”

“I’d like to think our fight continues,” Longoria said of the future, noting that the United States is a “scary place.” If he keeps his promises, it will be a scary place.”
