Food Lion Involved in Cyber Attack: What to Know

SALISBURY, NC (WBTV) – The American supermarket chain Food Lion was recently hit by a cyber security attack, the company confirmed last week.

Ahold Delhaize announced Friday, Nov. 8, that a “cybersecurity issue” had recently been discovered among its US division and brands. These brands include Food Lion, Giant, The Giant Company and more.

Some of the companies’ systems had since been taken offline to “help protect them” after the cyberattack was identified, officials said in a news release. The attack was under investigation by security teams with Ahold Delhaize USA, and officials said law enforcement had been notified.

Some operations were disrupted by the attack.

“This issue and subsequent mitigation actions have impacted certain Ahold Delhaize USA brands and services, including a number of pharmacies and certain e-commerce activities,” the company said. “We will continue to take steps to further protect our systems. The security of our customers, collaborators and partners is a top priority.”

The Food Lion stores have remained open since the attack. Most of the supermarket’s stores – more than 500 – are located in North Carolina, where the brand is headquartered.

Food Lion also has stores in Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.
