‘Outer Banks’ eyes spinoffs as Netflix series enters final season

EXCLUSIVE: Netflix’s hit action-adventure YA series Outer Banks is set to end with its upcoming fifth season. But this may not be the end of the Pogues.

“We’re excited for Season 5, and we’re excited for other stories in this universe down the line,” said series co-creators/executive producers and executive producers Jonas Pate, Josh Pate and Shannon Burke during an interview with Deadline bound for the release of season 4 part 2.

They wouldn’t elaborate, but hinted at ideas for potential spinoff series and more OBX the offshoots of the universe are being explored. According to sources, there are currently no projects in the works, but it is logical for Netflix to try to expand one of its top series – something it has already done with shows such as Stranger Things and Bridgerton and is exploring with Virgin River.

(In their interview, Pates and Burke discuss the big Season 4 finale shocker and what to expect from Season 5, with Rudy Pankow and the rest of the cast also weighing in.)

Netflix has hinted at its bigger plans for Outer Banks — expansion of the OBX brand into other areas: video games with the recently released mobile game Stories: Outer Banks; and live events with the annual Pougelandia fan music party. There are also licensing agreements for OBX merchandise from brands such as PacSun, Lottie London and Byrd.

A social media phenomenon, Outer Banks has spent a total of 28 weeks in the global top 10 English TV chart so far, with several more expected this year following the release of season 4 part 2.

The series revolves around a group of teenagers – the Pogues – from the working class part of a coastal community in North Carolina. It tells about their life, friendship and treasure hunting adventures.
