Lewis Hall and Taylor Harwood-Bellis in Lee Carsley’s final England squad | England

Newcastle’s Lewis Hall and Southampton’s Taylor Harwood-Bellis have been called into the England squad for the first time, and Lee Carsley has kept faith with Jack Grealish despite the striker not being involved in the last five Manchester City squads due to a damage.

Carsley, who are preparing for their final two games in interim management before Thomas Tuchel takes over, have not included Grealish’s club-mate John Stones or Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope, with Aaron Ramsdale returning to the squad. Declan Rice is included after missing Arsenal’s game at Inter on Wednesday.

Curtis Jones, a late addition to the final squad following withdrawals, has made the cut but there is no injured Kobbie Mainoo. Carsley said Tuchel had no influence on the selection but had congratulated the German on the appointment and they had exchanged text messages.

Carsley said it was a “good challenge” for Hall to try to hold down a place in the squad at left-back, where opportunities are fewer than in other positions. Harwood-Bellis came through the City academy and the defender had various loan spells, including at Southampton last season, before making a permanent move last summer.

England play Nations League games in Greece next Thursday and at home to Ireland three days later. England’s defeat by Greece at Wembley has left them in second place in Group B2, which would earn them a playoff promotion spot.

Carsley, who will return to the Under-21s, said he and his staff were “much better” for their time with the senior squad after being taken “right out of the comfort zone we’re used to”.
