Icy conditions have led to crashes Wednesday morning on Interstate 40 near Flagstaff.

I-40 eastbound was closed after a crash earlier in the day at milepost 195 near the Interstate-17 interchange, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. Shortly before 9 o’clock the lanes were reopened, ADOT announced as it warned commuters that there were “major delays in the area.”

ADOT issued on X, formerly Twitter: “We’re seeing wintry conditions in the Flagstaff area.”

The Arizona Department of Public Safety said there was half an inch of ice on I-40, the agency wrote pictures on X of accidents there, including tractor-trailers.

“Drivers, DO NOT block emergency lanes! This has delayed the efforts of troopers, ADOT and tow operators who are working hard to remove accidents from roadways,” DPS’ post read.

National Weather Service Flagstaff set to X that temperatures in the area were in the 20s while roads were “slick and dangerous” as snow pushed south into the White Mountain region.

“PLEASE SIT DOWN if you encounter snowy roads,” the post read.
