“I am devastated to share that my beloved wife, Jen – the love of my life and mother of our three children – passed away suddenly. “She was not only an incredible mother, but also a dedicated public servant who cared deeply about this community,” her husband Joe Giattino said in a statement.

“Jen’s unwavering commitment, kindness and passion touched so many lives here in Hoboken. We are devastated by her loss and I ask for privacy for our family as we try to navigate this difficult time. Thank you for your understanding and for keeping Jen in your thoughts and prayers.”

Giattino was first elected in 2011 on then-Mayor Dawn Zimmer’s ticket and won re-election convincingly in 2015, 2019 and 2023, most recently securing two-thirds of the vote despite running against two opponents, one of whom was supported by Mayor Ravi Bhalla .

She had an excellent record of being responsive to voters and was known to really enjoy knocking on doors during the campaign season, a combination that made her a difficult opponent to overcome.

The only blemish on her electoral record was an unsuccessful bid for mayor in 2017.

“It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the sudden and incredibly tragic passing of Council President Jen Giattino. Jen’s dedication to our community will never be forgotten. Her kindness, humility and quiet determination made her a beloved figure whose influence will could be felt for generations to come,” Bhalla added.

“There are no words to describe the sense of loss we all feel. Jen was a leader in our community and a fighter for all of us. Hoboken has lost a bright light and she will be deeply missed. I hope our community can come together in her memory, embrace the Giattino family with prayer and support, and respect their privacy during this difficult time.”

Hudson County Executive Craig Guy also offered his condolences and touted Giattino’s contributions to the Mile Square City.

“I am deeply saddened to hear of the tragic passing of Jen Giattino. Jen was a true public servant. She dedicated her life to helping the people of Hoboken and was a leader in her community. She was also a devoted wife and mother. All of Hudson County sends
Sincere condolences to Jen’s family.”
