Love Actually casting director reveals huge actor who wouldn’t be cast if movie made now – Films

Love actually is one of the most iconic Christmas films of all time, but the casting director behind the festive favorite has admitted she would make some big changes.

The popular film was released back in 2003 and stars Hugh Grant, Martine McCutcheon, Emma Thompson and Keira Knightley.

Fiona Weir was the casting director for Love actuallywhile Richard Curtis worked as a director.

Fiona has opened up about the changes she would make to the cast if Love actually was created today, despite the film featuring some big names.

She admitted that Hugh Grant’s role as Prime Minister could be scrapped if she made the film in 2024, as she now feels a woman would be better suited to the character.

“The first thing is that I wanted to cast a female prime minister,” casting director Fiona told Subway.

“I think if we did it today, Richard would write it very differently. Twenty years later, it’s a different country, it’s a different world, a lot has changed.

“So I think it’s going to be a very different script, you can’t really cast actors on it. But the one thing I can declare is that we would definitely cast a female prime minister.”

When asked which actress she had lined up for the role of Prime Minister, Fiona revealed Bridgerton star Adjoa Andoh tops her casting list.

Elsewhere, Fiona shared her thoughts on Richard’s previous comments on certain aspects of Love actually is outdated and lacks diversity.

Richard has previously stated: “I think I was inattentive and not as clever as I should have been.

“There are things you would change (about the film), but thank God society changes.

“My film will feel dated at some moments. The lack of diversity makes me feel uncomfortable and a bit stupid.”

Fiona agreed with Richard’s comments and highlighted certain comments about Martine’s character in the 2003 Christmas film, admitting she feels it is no longer “appropriate”.

“Obviously there are a few things in it that I’d rather not be,” she told Metro. “There is a certain comment about Martine McCutcheon’s physicality that Richard himself would say he wished wasn’t in there.

“It was something he felt was humorous at the time, but now realizes it’s not appropriate. I think that’s the case, of course.”

Fiona continued: “But where it holds up is that the emotions in it are completely authentic. As the saying goes, love is everywhere, it’s not always seen. All the characters, they’re wonderful actors.

“Nothing is posted, it is not cynical in any way. It is joyful and festive.

“I think that’s why it holds up, because it was done with a complete lack of cynicism, which is Richard. Richard is completely without cynicism.”
