Jarrod Bowen offers Julen Lopetegui judgment over West Ham’s sacking demands

Jarrod Bowen says it is up to West Ham players to turn their Premier League form around this season.

Inconsistency is a theme that has characterized the Hammers’ campaign so far, and being too close to the relegation zone has at times led to speculation surrounding Julen Lopetegui’s future.

The Irons are starting to find some form and are currently 14th in the league. But if they struggle to form a consistent run of results, they could quickly find themselves struggling at the wrong end of the table.

Talking further talkSPORT (Dec. 24, 11:24 a.m.), Bowen said: “This league is relentless, it’s merciless, and if you’re one percent off where you need to be, you’re going to be punished at this level, and I think we’ve had games this season where we haven’t been up to par and I think we’ve been punished for that.

“It’s up to us, it’s the players who go out on the field and have to put everything out there, perform and win our football games.”

Julen Lopetegui must work with his West Ham squad to improve

Given that it has been the manager who has borne the bulk of the blame for the Hammers’ season so far this season, it is nice to hear Bowen taking some responsibility on behalf of the players.

While the 28-year-old has been a standout star this term, the same cannot be said for many of his teammates, who have failed to perform to the level expected so far despite previously showing the ability to do so.

However, the Spaniard cannot escape some of the blame either, as he is the one who sets the team up tactically and dictates the style of play, which has been woeful at times and undoubtedly led to them losing games.

Therefore, it requires the boss to work closely with his players to bring about real change at The London Stadium in the long term, ensuring that everyone at the club is aligned in the direction the club is going.

Bowen is a loyal West Ham lad, so you can’t imagine he’d be the type to come and throw his manager under the bus here. But his recognition that there are mistakes on both sides could provide the kick his teammates need this term.
