Michigan lands transfer QB Mikey Keene

The Michigan Wolverines have landed their quarterback out of the transfer portal in the former Fresno State signal caller Mikey Keenewho has one season of eligibility remaining.

kene, which we mentioned as a potential fit on December 5thwas a three-star recruit in the 2021 class and played his first two seasons at UCF before transferring to Fresno State in 2023, where he threw for 2,976 yards, 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. This season he threw for 2892 yards with 18 touchdowns and 11 picks. Keene started the season opener at Michigan and went 22-of-36 for 235 yards with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions, including a pick-six thrown to Will Johnson, so there’s at least some preliminary and in-person evaluation of him.

“He’s not as big as a lot of quarterbacks, but he gets the ball out quick,” Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore said during her Week 1 pre-Fresno State press conference. “He’s mobile. The offense runs through him, so for us to be successful against him, it’s about how we stop him, how we contain him. He’s going to make his throws. He’s going to do some really good things. He’s going to be able to scramble outside the box so we’ve got to contain him and confuse him a little bit with coverages and things that we do and make it messy for him because it really goes through him. When he is healthy for them, he does one really good job with ball control and control of the offense and you can see that the offense has a lot more confidence with him in the game.”

Keene could be the experienced bridge quarterback who could also pave the way for a graceful transition to Bryce Underwood era.

“There’s a lot of positions that we’re going to add in depth and add spots to help fill,” head coach Sherrone Moore said of the program’s portal approach at QB. “The specifics of that, I think you’ll have to see, but we’ll definitely look at a quarterback in the portal and we’ll go from there.

“(We want to have) experience, a guy who’s going to be a good leader, a good teammate, obviously can play, and yeah, he’s got to be a good fit. That’s got to be the one piece.”
