MassDOT: Snowfall impacts Friday travel conditions statewide

Drivers should be aware of snowfall affecting travel in “many regions of the state,” the Massachusetts Department of Transportation warned late Friday afternoon.

Light to moderate snowfall is expected to continue into the evening and affect Friday’s commute. MassDOT urged drivers to allow extra travel time and check forecasts for their routes and destinations.

The National Weather Service expects as much as 5 inches of snow to fall across parts of the state. Eastern Massachusetts is expected to see the most snow due to an offshore coastal storm flooding the area with between 1 and 3 inches of snow.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 4 on Saturdays. The snowfall is expected to taper off during the night.

Accidents were reported late Friday afternoon. First responders shut down the eastbound side of the Massachusetts Turnpike after a multi-vehicle crash involving two tractor-trailers around 1 p.m. 1:30 p.m. just past exit 90 in Auburn.

In a news release sent Friday afternoon, MassDOT said the agency has more than 3,000 pieces of equipment available statewide for snow and ice response, approximately 320,000 tons of salt, 850,000 gallons of magnesium chloride and 310,000 gallons of mixed brine available, “which are being deployed after need.”
