Afghanistan’s new batting sensation Sediqullah Atal credited his performances in the last ACC Emerging Asia Cup as a springboard for his seamless transition to international cricket.

Afghanistan sealed a series win against Zimbabwe on the back of Sediqullah Atal’s maiden ODI century and his opening stand of 191 runs with Abdul Malik (84) helping the visitors post a massive total on a difficult pitch. This was followed by a ruthlessly disciplined effort from their bowling unit that sent Zimbabwe crashing out to a paltry total of 54, thus registering a 232-run victory.

Atal had been making waves since the ACC Emerging Asia Cup in October 2024, where he became the player of the tournament by scoring 368 runs for Afghanistan A across five matches at an amazing batting average of 122.66 and strike rate of 145. His amazing performances were crucial to Afghanistan A’s title-winning run.

“Winning the Emerging Asia Cup title was a monumental achievement for Afghanistan cricket. As the tournament’s top scorer, I gained immense confidence as I realized that I possess the ability to excel at all levels,” Atal told Cricbuzz after the second ODI against Zimbabwe.

“This newfound belief (after excelling for Afghanistan A in the ACC Emerging Cup) has been instrumental in my continued performances with the national team,” he added.

Having made a strong start to his international career, Atal stressed the importance of avoiding complacency. The left-hander is constantly looking to add to his game and develop his skills while also working hard on fitness.

“Cricket is constantly evolving and it is important to keep learning in modern cricket,” said Atal.

“I am consistently focusing on improving my fitness and skills to position myself as a good package of physical, mental and technical ability on the international stage,” he said.

“It’s my first hundred and I’m happy. This will give me more confidence,” he said.

While reflecting on his century, the southpaw had a special dedication to make for his maiden three-figure bank in international cricket.

“My family, especially my mother, is my biggest source of motivation. When I perform well, I dedicate my success to her as her happiness means the world to me,” he said.

The ODI series will conclude with the final ODI scheduled at the Harare Sports Club on December 21. Following this, the two teams will then lock horns in a two-match Test series starting on December 26 in Bulawayo.

Atal, who was picked for the one-off Test against New Zealand that was then postponed in Greater Noida in September this year due to rain, has retained his place in the Test squad for the Zimbabwe series.
