When does summer time start in 2025? Dark days will soon disappear

With the arrival of the winter solstice comes boats shortest day and longest night of 2024.

As Americans adjust to colder weather, many have one question on their minds: when will it stop getting dark so quickly?

Although the Earth’s tilt is responsible for the extra darkness on Saturday, semiannual time changes are the work of man. Daylight saving time, which is intended to bring more daylight on winter mornings, is practiced in almost every state in the United States with the exception of Hawaii and Arizona.

Daylight saving time ended last month when we changed our clocks back one hour. And while the extra hour of sleep was appreciated on November 3rd, many are counting down the days until the sun sets later that night.

Here’s what you need to know about the next winter solstice and the next national time change, including efforts to remove it permanently.

When is the winter solstice?

Winter Solstice 2024 will take place in the Northern Hemisphere on Saturday 21 December at 4:20 AM EST. according to National Weather Service.

It is expected to be the shortest day and longest night of 2024 for the Northern Hemisphere as that part of the Earth tilts away from the Sun. Meanwhile, the summer solstice occurs on June 20, 2025.

The ground slopes approx 23.5 degrees on its axis, and each solstice is dictated by the amount of solar declination, or “the latitude of the earth where the sun is directly overhead at noon” according to National Geographic.

When does summer time start in 2025?

Daylight Saving Time is set to begin on Sunday, March 9, 2025.

What is summer time?

Daylight saving time is the time between March and November when most Americans adjust their clocks forward one hour.

We gain an hour in November (as opposed to losing an hour in the spring) to provide more daylight on winter mornings. When we “jump forward” in March, it is to add more daylight in the evening. In the northern hemisphere is autumnal equinox is Sunday, September 22, marking the start of the fall season.

Is summertime over?

In recent years, Congress has faced the possibility of stopping changing clocks. In 2022, the US Senate unanimously approved the Sunshine Protection Act, which would make daylight saving time permanent, but US House of Representatives did not pass it, and President Joe Biden did not sign it.

Earlier this month, President-elect Donald Trump said he aims to end daylight saving time and make standard time year-round.

“The Republican Party will do its best to eliminate Daylight Savings Time, which has a small but powerful constituency, but shouldn’t!” Trump wrote on the social media Truth Social. “Daylight saving time is inconvenient and very expensive for our nation.”
