A mild gray sky kicks off Utah’s work week on Monday

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Happy Monday, Utah! The working week kicks off with relatively mild weather, but a little on the gloomy side. Today’s daytime highs will be similar to yesterday’s temperatures, northern Utah will top out in the 40s while southern Utah warms into the 50s.

The bottom line? Gray skies are expected today with light showers in the north Monday night into Tuesday morning.

Southern Utah will have a mix of sun and clouds, but thicker clouds will roll into northern Utah through the afternoon, bringing cloudy skies. The northernmost parts of the state will see light valley rain and mountain snow from Monday night into Tuesday morning, mainly for the northern Wasatch Front, Cache Valley and Wasatch Mountains.

Valleys could see rain transition to snow Tuesday morning, but it’s not very likely to stick to most surfaces. This will be short and light, so even the mountains are only looking at a few inches, maybe a little more for mountains near the Utah-Idaho state line. By Tuesday morning, the valleys should be drying out, but persistent moisture may mean a few isolated drizzles and showers in higher ground to the north.

High pressure will start to build again Tuesday evening, which will settle down for a while. The downside of subsiding weather is the unwinding of valley inversions and its attendant smoggy haze. You can expect poor air quality and haze in the northern valleys on Thursday. The inversion will stew until another system rolls through, which may not be until next week.
