Live Updates: Australia vs India, Third Test Day Two at the Gabba

Live: Australia vs India at the Gabba

35th over – Siraj continues

Smith goes outside.

And he is a new defender back down on the field.

34th over – Reddy has four to go

Travis Head is the new man in

Two slips and a gylly, Head cuts off his pads to short midwicket for no runs.

The head hits the next positively to cover. No run.

Travis Head had endured a really bad run at the Gabba in Test matches, four balls, four wickets, so he will be glad to have shaken that off.

He defends another.

Head bangs again to cover for no run.

EDGED! MARNUS MUST GO!

Big wicket for India!

Marnus tried the extravagant drive, gets a thick edge to Virat Kohli at second slip, who takes a good catch over the head.

Marnus must go after 12, the partnership ends on the 37th.

Australia 3-75.

34th over – Reddy continues

Wonderful from Smith who cuts off his pads to deep mid-wicket. They must drive three. Oh Bumrah has got himself in quite a mess down the rope. He appears to be OK, despite taking massive bruises on his ego after nearly tripping the ball on his leg when he tripped over the rope.

I don’t hate the strategy

It seems that two rough batsmen are more concerned with wearing India down and finding form than winning – which, given the likelihood of a washout, seems quite strategically sound.

33rd over – SIraj continues

You said it Mike, although the audience seems to have lost a bit of interest in their Siraj bait so far.

Smith is hit on the pad and they run a single. Smith has come a little way over to offside, so there is some interest in sending this one over, but it looked high and on the legs – conjectures borne out by ball tracking on TV. India didn’t announce, but it says a lot about how far he’s come that it was even considered.

A beach ball now receives treatment from the crowd as play is delayed while it is retrieved from the outfield.

Oh, that boo is back now as Siraj comes down the field to change the bail. Marnus looks him deep in the eyes, and as soon as he goes back to his mark, they return to their previous orientation.

Siraj, boos amplified, comes in and toasts a short one, which Marnus leaves alone.

Now, in some more s***housery from Marnus, he makes Siraj wait at the top. Siraj steams in, waving his arms extravagantly as Marnus leaves a tight outside off.

Marnus cuts the next one off his pads for a couple of easy runs to square leg.

And he drives the last pitch with no runs.

Good, amusing how loads and absolutely nothing happened at the same time.

32nd over – Reddy continues

Marnus drives towards cover, but cannot beat the field.

He goes outside.

Now Marnus drives to the middle of – it doesn’t come off with the satisfying thump it sometimes does when he times it well, but at least he gets an eye.

Now he cuts off his pads and they run two out to deep square leg with boo boy Siraj getting treatment from the crowd as he ran around from wide fine leg.

Bumrah does really well there at wide mid on, dives to stop runs, while Marnus drives nicely back down the ground. Good shot, good fielding.

He leaves the last one.

Gabba jumped

This Gabba wicket looks set to provide a decent amount of bounce today

31st over – Siraj continues

Two slips and a drain, fine leg, mid on and mid on the only fielders on the wrong side as Smith turns in on a shorter ball and pulls for a couple.

Smith defends the next one at short cover and rises to his toes as the ball rises into him.

Outside, well outside, as it happens, and Smith walks.

Siraj is a bit of a scatter gun at the moment that you are back into the body and Smith defends it as the sun peaks out from behind the clouds and bathes the ground for a moment in sunlight.

Smith is hammered into the pad via the inside edge of his bat – Siraj stares down the pitch towards him and India’s offside ring joins his gaze.

Smith defends the latter and then signals for some new gloves.

Dancing star?

Smudger’s footwork more Dancing with the Stars vibes than the best since Bradman

– LW

I can’t speak for Dancing with the Stars, but the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing had a good record with cricketers early on.

Former England cricketers Mark Ramprakash (Season 3) and Darren Gough (Season 4) both won it.

Phil Tufnell, Michael Vaughan and Graeme Swann all also competed but were less successful.

This year’s series was won overnight by the comedian Chris McCausland.

30th over – Nitish Kumar Reddy continues

Thanks Jon.

Smith defends the first one as Siraj is booed down fine leg.

Brilliant shot from Smith back into the ground. It doesn’t go for four as Akash Deep does really well to dive in and flick the ball back. Unfortunately, there is no support there as Bumrah crashes into support. They run three.

Marnus cuts to short mid off but there is no run.

He leaves the next pair with a flamboyant swing of his bat.

Solid defense to end the run from Marnus.

29th over – Siraj vs Labuschagne

He plays off the back foot, and into his back foot. It looks like he tried to screw it through, but he got a hefty inside edge.

He leaves outside, but it was close to bail. Labuschagne trusts the bounce despite Reddy’s last ball dribbled through.

Labuschgne hits a cover on the bounce straight to KL Rahul at cover for nobody.

And another big boo for Siraj as he completes his transfer to Labuschagne.

Meanwhile, Simon Smale gets no boos as he takes over.

28th over – Nitish Kumar Reddy again

Smith falls over towards the tip as he walks across his stumps. He appears to have asked Labuschagne to stand further off the pitch at the non-striker’s end.

Very awkward in defense to a ball angled down leg and swinging down the line of the stumps. He is really square and the ball hits his back thigh.

Reddy has plugged the cover and dared Smith to take him for a drive. Smith doesn’t take the bait just yet, happy to leave, and strangely leaves.

The last ball of the over stays a bit low as Smith shoulders his arms and it whizzes past outside off.

How about that weather?

How’s the weather over there at the moment looking at the coverage on tv it seems very dark

– Bailey

Hi Bailey,

Honestly, it doesn’t look too bad. There are clouds for sure, but it doesn’t feel like rain is imminent.

27th over – Siraj again

Labuschagne gets a single as Nitish Kumar Reddy goes over the top for one. Interesting that star player Ravindra Jadeja is at mid-wicket, rather than a busier spot like backward where Reddy missed that ball.

Hoof! Siraj knocks it into the turf in his own half and it flies away for five wides.

A little Smudge pushes off his hip that runs away to deep fine leg for a single. Smith looks much more comfortable from the hip and thigh than anything on the outside.

26th over – Nitish Kumar Reddy is on the attack

Steve Smith is still walking around the paddock. A good test for these inexperienced bowlers like Akash and Reddy to adapt their lines to Smith’s madness.

Reddy strays quite wide and Smith is happy to depart.

So Reddy fires it onto the pads and Smith defends awkwardly, closes the bat and gets an edge back towards the bowler.

A little shorter and Smith is able to flick off the hip and take two behind square leg.

25th over – Buos tells you that Mohammed Siraj is in the attack

And his first ball is crisp and bouncy. Labuschagne just manages to get the bat out of the way.

Siraj fires one in at Labuschagne’s hip and the ball balloons straight up. It lands safely as Siraj storms through to kick the ball onto the stumps, but Labuschagne had no idea where it was.

Meanwhile, the boos are getting louder. Virat Kohli, no stranger to toughing it out from Australian crowds, runs from second slip to put an arm around Siraj.

A big shout for LBW as Labuschagne goes and carries it on the pads. Siraj wants a review but Rohit Sharma says no and signals that it was too high. He’s right. But Marnus, use your bat.

24th over – Smith is tested by Akash Deep

India have abandoned the leg slip plan with KL Rahul at third. Akash might not have appreciated the edge that raced away for four in his previous over.

Not sure how to describe it. Smith took a big step and Akash fired it past his hip and Smith almost did a 180 to get out of the way.

And now the big rustling leaves outside are back again. They used to make me feel like he was really locked in, but now it feels like overcompensating and trying to recapture the magic of the past.

(AP)

Akash comes round the wicket and the leg slip returns. Smith looks like he’s tried to hit a ball off the hip and they take two runs. But he may have just kicked it away. Akash wants it called as such but the ref says it was a genuine attempt at a shot. Who can really tell with Smith.

And we need a drink.

23rd over – Labuschagne faces Bumrah

Another edge! This time it falls short from Jaiswal at gully. Bumrah is confident and on the charge, using the small seam movement to great effect.

And now he has beaten Labuschagne to the edge.

The third regulation slip is back in place as Bumrah bowls. He is clearly keen to stay outside and keep testing the outside edge.

Marnus claps after the near miss, but it has Boxing smiling after being cut to pretend it didn’t hurt.

Another shout of “ooooohhh” from around the ground as another ball slips past Labuschagne’s outside edge.

He defends solidly to end the run and immediately calls for a glove change. Maybe that was the problem all along.
