I was actually away last season to see Newcastle win 3-0 at Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup.

It was a great occasion and fun in itself; Eddie Howe had named a team with all the full-backs and yet they got through it.

This is something else.

Manchester United have been Newcastle’s bogey team in the Premier League era; they always find a way to mess things up for them.

They did it in 1995-96 and they’ve done it countless times since, including last season by getting them a place in Europe.

Nothing went wrong here. Watching Manchester United play as badly as they did in the first half still takes some getting used to.

They were as sad as Newcastle were great. Astonishing!
