Is the stock market open on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day? Does the post office deliver mail?

As we look ahead to 2025, you must be prepared for changes in the holiday schedule

Happy New Year!

As we prepare to end 2024 and welcome the arrival of 2025, it’s worth keeping in mind what will be open and closed, both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Here’s our quick guide.

Is the stock market open?

The two major US stock markets – the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq – will be closed on January 1st, but will be open on December 31st.

The bond markets close at 14.00 on 31 December and will remain closed on 1 January.

Trading on all financial markets will resume on 2 January.

Will mail be delivered? Are FedEx and UPS open?

The US Postal Service will deliver mail on December 31st, and post offices will be open (but customers are advised to contact their local office for specific hours). There will be no regular mail delivery on January 1, but Priority Mail Express shipments will be delivered; post offices will be closed that day.

UPS (UPS) will have limited delivery and pickup service on December 31st and no delivery or pickup service on January 1st, except for UPS Express Critical service.

FedEx (FDX) will also have changed service on December 31st. Service will be curtailed on January 1, except for FedEx Custom Critical.

Are banks closed?

Banks are generally closed on January 1. But you can always make transactions via an ATM or your bank’s app or website. Banks should be open on December 31, although it’s worth checking with your local branch to see if it has shortened hours on that day.

Will government offices be closed?

Since January 1st is a federal holiday, all non-essential federal government offices are closed. It’s also typically recognized as a state holiday, so expect state offices to be closed as well.

But what about December 31st? States make their own individual decisions, with a few, such as Louisiana and Wisconsin, choosing to make it a state holiday.

No economic data is scheduled for release on New Year’s Day, while New Year’s Eve at 9 Eastern time brings the S&P Case-Shiller index of home prices in the top 20 US metropolitan areas.

Are the shops open?

If you’re looking for something to do on New Year’s Eve, rest assured that shops and supermarkets will generally be open on December 31, but some will close early.

Most major retailers are also open on 1 January. A notable exception is Costco (COST), which gives its employees a day off.
