Jason Momoa Officially Returns to DC as Lobo After Saying ‘He’s Always Been My Favorite’

The Aquaman star officially returns to the new DCU, led by James Gunn and Peter Safran, to play an entirely different character: Lobo, the comics’ galactic bounty hunter. The actor confirmed the news on Monday by sharing an excerpt from a 2023 Fandango interview where he called the figure his favorite.

“So Lobo was…I collect comics and I don’t do that much anymore, but he’s always been my favorite and I’ve always wanted to play Lobo because I’m like, ‘Hello? That’s the perfect role, ” Momoa said in that interview. “I mean, look. If they call and ask me to play him, that’s a f— yeah. I didn’t get that call, so I don’t want to put fake news out there, but if they ever call me and ask me to play or ask me to audition, I’m there.”

Momoa captioned the post with, “They called.”

Weekly entertainment reached out to reps for DC and Momoa for comment. According to the Hollywood trade, Deadline and Blackwill Momoa’s Lobo arrive in Supergirl film, which gets the main role House of the Dragon exclaims Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, the titular strong woman.

Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya) will direct the film, which also features Matthias Schoenaerts (The old guard) as the villain Krem from Yellow Hill and Eve Ridley (3 Body problem) as the galactic warrior Ruthye Marye Knoll. Plot details are under wraps, but it is said to adapt the comic book Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrowwhere Ruthye, an alien girl, asks Supergirl for help in hunting down those who killed her father and destroyed her world.

The film will begin production in the new year. It is scheduled to hit theaters on June 26, 2026.

Gunn celebrated Momoa’s casting by sharing a very patriotic piece of artwork of Lobo on Twitter/X and Threads. “Welcome to the #DCU, Jason Momoa,” he added in a separate post to his Instagram Stories.

Lobo, nicknamed “the main man”, is a muscular alien from the planet Czarnia. He always looks like he’s going to a Kiss concert with flowing black hair, a black leather vest and a “space cycle” he calls Spacehog.

Momoa’s tenure as the DC hero Aquaman/Arthur Curry officially ended with 2023’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdomhaving played the role across several films and a brief appearance in HBO’s Peacemaker season 1. But the actor talked about his passion for Lobo over the years. Now with the newly revamped DCU, starting with this year’s Creature Commandos animated series and continues into next year’s live-action Superman movies and Peacemaker season 2 Momoa finally gets his chance.
