Jason Momoa to play Lobo in ‘Supergirl’ movie

Aquaman star Jason Momoa is staying in the DC fold. The actor appears in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow as Lobo, the alien bounty hunter who first appeared in the comics in 1983, The Hollywood Reporter have confirmed.

Momoa was the face of the Aquaman franchise for the previous DC regime, appearing as Aquaman in a cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) before he starred Justice League (2017) and then toplining the 2018s Aquaman. The feature was a huge hit, grossing $1 billion and marking the pinnacle of the DCEU films, which ended with last year’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. The last film was a flop, earning just $439 million and failing among critics.

Momoa has long wanted to play the character and has talked about it for years, including during the press rounds for The lost kingdom. On Monday, the actor shared a quote from that press tour, saying he hoped DC would call him about the role. He subtitle the quote on Instagram with “they called.”

There have been various attempts to bring Lobo to the big screen over the years. Filmmakers such as Guy Ritchie and Brad Peyton took both jabswith Dwayne Johnson circling the reel for Peyton’s version. In 2018, Warner Bros. flirted with and Michael Bay also with the idea, but the concept never got off the ground. On the small screen, Emmett J. Scanlan played Lobo on the SyFy series Krypton.

Writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen created Lobo for the comic Omega men No. 3. The blue-skinned, cigar-chomping alien has super strength and healing powers and has fought heroes and villains alike.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow hits theaters on June 26, 2026 and stars Milly Alcock as the hero. It will be the second feature in the new DC Universe overseen by DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, with Gunn’s Superman film arrives in July.

Momoa’s casting is remarkable. When Gunn and Safran took over the DC brand, they left the door open for fan-favorite actors from the previous regime to stay in the fold, possibly as different characters. Momoa is the first to continue, albeit in a new role. Momoa starred opposite Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller and Ray Fisher in Justice League.
