Are there more episodes of Squid Game Season 2 beyond the 7 released? Details examined

Play octopus Season 2 reigns supreme on Netflix and is receiving rave reviews worldwide. However, while the first season of Play octopus consisted of nine long and detailed episodes, the second part of the Netflix show has completed its narrative in just seven episodes.

After The Front Man killed Gi-hun’s close friend Jun-bae, the seventh episode and finale of Squid Game season two ended on a major cliffhanger, leaving Gi-hun’s future uncertain.

Since Play octopus season 2 had a relatively shorter running time compared to the debut season, fans all over the world have been wondering if more episodes of the second season will drop soon. The short answer to this question is no.

Second season of Play octopus will not release any more episodes after the conclusion of its finale.

This is in line with director Hwang Dong-Hyuk’s statement that he had originally written the second and upcoming third seasons together in a single arc. Realizing that the material would be too long-winded for a single season, he decided to end the second installment decisively with the seventh episode, leaving room for the third season to take over.

Here’s everything we know.

Why do Play octopus season 2 only has seven episodes?

It is no wonder that fans of Play octopus across the globe had become accustomed to the nine-episode format used in the debut season. In contrast, the seven episodes of the second season came as a shock to many. Furthermore, as the stakes were raised and the seventh episode ended on a cliffhanger, fans were left wanting more.

talking with Variety Magazine in a recent interview about the Netflix show, director Hwang Dong-Ryuk revealed:

“I wrote seasons two and three at the same time, and we were in production for both at the same time, and currently we’re in the post-production process for season 3. When I wrote the script for the two seasons, I felt like there was a big turning point or an inflection point, and it was the end of episode seven, so I thought it would be fair to have a separate season after that, that’s why I had the first seven episodes as season 2 and then the rest of season 3.”

The good news is that the audience will not have to wait long before the cliffhanger Play octopus season 2 is resolved by season 3 of the South Korean drama. Although there is no official release date for the third season, it is known that the upcoming installment is currently in the post-production phase and will drop sometime in 2025.

Lee Byung-Hun opens up about Play octopus season 2

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Variety Magazineactor Lee Byung-Hun, who played the frontman’s enigmatic character, opened up about his experience. When asked about his initial reaction after reading the script, Byung-Hun revealed:

“When director Hwang decided that we would continue with season 2, I was curious about how the narrative would develop. When I first got the script, I thought it would be very challenging for me as an actor, but very fun and juicy at the same time to play this character with three people because I have to act as the front man, but I’m also evil.”

He continued,

“Then sometimes he speaks truthfully about his past when he lives as In-ho. Then, after he enters the game, he takes on this false identity as Oh Young-il. So there are three people I have to portray and I knew it would be fun, but I had a little pressure on whether I could really pull it off, but most importantly, my heart fluttered to take on this character.

Play octopus season 2 is available exclusively on Netflix.
