With the Australians reeling after a 4-11 collapse in 22 balls, India hoped to strike against the last recognized batsman in the hosts’ line-up.

But when Marnus Labuschagne hit it to Jaiswal at slip on 46, a relatively simple catch was dropped by the youngster, marking his second blunder of the day.

Rohit’s reaction was furious, immediately throwing his arm in frustration and then glaring down at Jaiswal.

Bowler Akash Deep also reacted angrily, showing a pattern of lack of support among the Indian players for their promising young teammate, but it was the experienced captain who was criticized by several pundits.

“I have to be honest, I don’t like that reaction from the Indian skipper,” said Mike Hussey on Fox Cricket.

“I appreciate he is emotional and he wants wickets desperately, but you have to send the message of calmness and support. Nobody means to drop a catch.

“He’ll feel bad enough as it is to put down a catch, especially someone like Marnus Labuschagne, it happens quickly, it’s in, it’s out. You don’t have to see that as a young player.”

Australian star Alyssa Healy added: “Especially when you need him to go out and open the batting with you, to make some runs and try to win a Test match for your country.”

Unfortunately for Jaiswal, he dropped another much tougher chance just before tea, playing close but not getting his hands down to dismiss Pat Cummins.

Rohit had moments earlier told his young charge to “keep low”. His reaction was more subdued this time, but he still stared blankly at Jaiswal.

It comes amid a frustrating spell for the captain, who has recorded scores of 3, 10, 6 and 3 in this series after missing out on the opening win in Perth.

Former state-level wicketkeeper Darren Berry tweeted: “You have to feel for the kid, Jaiswal has dropped 3 catches today. He could have lost 3 crucial chances, the game and the series.

“His only answer is a match-winning innings when his chance comes later today for India. Needs a pat on the back from his senior players who won’t be scolded.”‍️
