Even with the various iterations, co-directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch still feels that Reeves is the only person who could take on the title role and is convinced that he played a vital role in the success of the franchise.

In an interview with PEOPLE timed for the 10th anniversary of the first film, Stahelski, 56, asked the question, “Could you have done John Wick without Keanu?” before quickly answering the question himself: “No, not as you see it.”

“The stoicism that John Wick shows is really a big part of who Keanu is,” he continued. “You have to see Keanu on set. I know everyone hears the stories, but he’s always there early. He’s always the first one there (and) the last one to leave.”

“There’s really no other person who could play John Wick,” added Leitch, 49. “He obviously brings the passion, the physicality, and there’s just this undeniable emotional quality to him where you feel for him and he pulls your heartstrings.”
