Birmingham Bowl lightning delay: When will Vanderbilt vs. Georgia Tech

With 7:17 left in the fourth quarter, the action is paused between Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech in the Birmingham Bowl due to lightning. From the delay, Vanderbilt boasts a 35-13 lead over the Yellow Jackets.

While fans at the game certainly aren’t happy about the weather delay, it might be best for both teams to have a moment to cool down. Things got volatile between Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech in the third quarter, with several players exchanging words and shoving after plays.

The players weren’t the only ones feeling the heat. Georgia Tech head coach Brent key received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for yelling at an official after a questionable call. As the fourth quarter began, Vanderbilt became the head coach Clark Lea discussed the obvious tension between the two teams.

“They are two competitive and tough teams,” Lea said. “Obviously it’s going to be a bit chippy, but they play hard. Both sides want to win, so that’s the first.

“It’s about focus. It’s about discipline, respect and spirit for us. We’ve got to close out the game, which means we’ve got to focus on our end, on execution and doing things we’ve got to do to finish against a really good team.”

Vanderbilt showed an excess of focus through the first eight minutes of the fourth quarter, rattling off 14 unanswered points and forcing a fumble out of the Yellow Jackets.

When the Birmingham Bowl resumes, Vanderbilt will look to put the finishing touches on its masterpiece. If the Commodores pull out the win, it will be their first bowl win since 2013.
