The sinkhole on the New Jersey Interstate was caused by the collapse of an abandoned mine shaft

A sinkhole on an interstate in northern New Jersey that has closed eastbound traffic for more than 24 hours was caused by the collapse of an abandoned mine shaft, officials said.

Interstate 80 eastbound in Wharton is closed and will remain closed until further notice as sinkhole repairs continue, the New Jersey Department of Transportation said Friday.

Crews responded to the 40-foot by 40-foot sinkhole Thursday morning.

The area has been stabilized, and the excavation work started on Thursday evening, the Ministry of Transport says.

Officials are not saying when the interstate will reopen because of the weather and the “extensive nature of the repairs,” the department said.
